The high-frequency electrosurgical scalpel, commonly known as a high-frequency (HF) electrosurgical knife, is a powerful tool widely used in modern surgical procedures. The difference between cutting and coagulation lies in the waveform of the high-frequency current:

For the HF current to act safely on the human body, it must complete a closed circuit by returning to the electrosurgical unit. In monopolar mode, the current flows back through a grounding pad placed on the patient. In bipolar mode, such as with bipolar forceps, one tip delivers the current while the other returns it, eliminating the need for a separate grounding pad.
